Great points all around, and agreed 100%. Schumer made the right call, but didn't do a good job explaining his thinking until the end. I wish a good communicator, someone like Ritchie Torres, would run for Schumer's seat in 2028, but he's apparently got his eye on NY's governorship next year.
It is his fault if he doesn't understand what the Republicans are thinking, if he doesn't grasp the nature of this moment. He doesn't. That's plain in his NYT interview. That's when you step aside in politics: when you're not the guy that that the moment requires. He is not the guy.
It really was an impossible choice for Dems, but you’re right that their messaging could have been stronger. My 2 Dem senators from Hawaii split the vote, one yes and one no.
Thank you for presenting another side to this. However, the optics looked terrible with Schumer seeming more anxious to start his book tour than providing any reasoning.
This sounds about right to me. An incredibly complex decision….and yet so many who’ve never been In Schumer’s shoes feel completely confident in their own opinions. I understand the emotions: we are facing terrible fear, the media has abandoned us, Trump/Musk are ripping the government out by the roots, thousands are suddenly jobless…. But there was a half-magical belief that filibustering the CR would ‘save us’ somehow. I don’t think that’s true.
Meanwhile, Indivisible, so many pundits and podcasters, jump to assault Democrats while Trump’s reign of terror rolls on. Boggles the mind.
This has been my synopsis of the situation exactly. Give the fools the rope and let them run and they will surely tangle themselves irretrievably by this flurry of ill thought out activity. Let them own it entirely.
But the Budget is the hill to die on- No $4.5 Trillion tax cut continuation for the plutocrats!!
I definitely was afraid that the shutdown would be blamed on the democrats if it had gotten to that but we need different leadership that communicates and leads in in strong way. Schumer has served his time but we need new energy!
Your “Second” point about the courts is moot now TFG has ignored a Federal Judges order and threw it in our face.
This shutdown wax necessary to show we did not consent if for no other reason. We are not playing “chess “ anymore we are playing Paintball and we fumbled an opportunity to paint our opponent as a tyrant.
TFG folds when confronted and if we had made this about forcing Musk out not only would we have a popular groundswell to propel us into the Specials, VA and Midterm elections, we would have the knowledge that History shows we do not Consent to what is going on.
People are already in the streets and Speaker Emeritus Pelosi saw this and warned Sen Schumer…her judgement has always been superior to his.
That’s why we needed to do this and why as Schumer needs to step down- no MONEYBEGS answers until we have a fighter, like Warren in the Leadership.

Not up to this time or task. This is why they are out of power and we are out of time. Weak, weak, weak.
